Manga Eye Tutorial For Beginners by reikohattori Manga Eye Tutorial For Beginners by reikohattori
This is an eye tutorial for beginners! Or people who want to improve their skills in manga drawing.

Of course styles differ from person to person, but a majority would like to draw eyes that are detailed and look "professional".

Tell me if you don't like it or it's....I dunno. Not up to your standards. :iconawkwardplz:
I don't claim to be an expert! This is just something I learned and found interesting to share! :iconyayzplz:

Thank you so much!  Great guide!  I really need to practice, because eyes are the hardest things for me to draw on an anime character.  I love the eyes in the original Sailor Moon anime, so I think I'm starting with them.  :)

Brilliant tutorial, really helps me with my eyes. 6 years of practice and I still haven't got the eye quite down yet. that's what practice means, guys. It has to be solid and you have to work at it a LOT, which is another excellent point made here.

I'd like to see a coloring tutorial sometime ^^ I love deviantart...

Amy: I would like to see a tutorial on coloring eyes. Books written by Christopher Hart do a pretty good job of showing you how to draw eyes. Very similar to what you've said here actually. But the books never really go in depth on how to color the eyes. I think, for the most part, I draw eyes okay, but the way I color them might need some work.

Really great tips; thanks! I'll definitely be trying these ideas out. If you could do a follow-up on finishing the eye off, then that would be great!

Hey, this is a great tutorial! Many artists call their eyes "anime" eyes or "manga" eyes but they lack the professional quality of a real manga artist. I hope a lot of people see this and learn from it. :)

The fact is "manga" eyes isn't really a style; its far too open and vague. When you look at art found in One Piece and Dragon Ball its easy to see. The eyes in those mangas are far from what people would consider "manga" eyes. Not to mention how simple they are; you don't have to make it complicated! I know that going back to akira's style from dragon ball helped me a lot to developing actual shapes to my eyes. You need to have the basics down before you add anything flashy. Maybe you should mention something like that next time? :P

This is a great tutorial! I hope a lot of young artists look at it. :)

You could have said that the lines marking the top and the bottom of the line are thicker because in RL, the eyelids are thick and with volume, so they cast shadows. Perhaps added a drawing of an eye - realistic - in profile. Answering the 'why' question makes information stick :D
